I never did get around to putting up a new slideshow after we did the upgrade work on the arch a few months back…so maybe this video will show everyone a bit more of what we got done.

And now you know:
The link is a nice video of John “The Jester” Howard crushing Leviathan (8A) in Portrane about a week ago.
Fair play Jonny… Right now back to the training board to get ready to session John’s next 5+

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock (no pun intended!) for the last number of weeks, you will know that there’s been a whole host of work going on in the Arch, resulting in a complete revamp of our bouldering facility and a total grip reset!
Many thanks to all those that put time in to make the improvements happen and a particular thanks to the Improvements Committee who planned and delivered all of the work on time and in budget!!
There are a couple of small things left to iron out, but I just wanted to emphasise that normal service has resumed and the Arch is back up and running 24:7…
Happy climbing!
Cheers,
MD
With the amount of new panels and improvement works behind the walls we need a good amount of people.
So if anybody is in anyway good with a screwdriver or prepared for a crash course in how to use one, please contact me directly (raymond.carter28@gmail.com).
You will not need to worry about cutting timber panels as we will have two carpenters that will be full time cutting pieces out for you guys.
I need 1 more person for the 19th & 20th.
But I am coming up a little short for the 26th, this we hope will be the last day of the works.
Leaving the Sunday 27th for the new holds set.
Also guys we need lots of buckets to sort the holds into as we take them off and clean them, so buckets donations for the works durations would be on way of helping out if your not around to help on the days.
We also need as many cordless drills as possible for both the holds stripping and carpentry. So any drills you can spare will be looked after and returned.
Cheers
- Ray
Hey,
Following on from the last update, we now have a confirmed date for the Arch Improvement Works.
The works will kick off on Friday 18th February, and will continue until Sunday 27th February.
During this time The Arch will not be accessible for climbing.
The Improvements Committee have agreed their plan for the works and will be contacting members directly to request assistance to complete the works – if you’re contacted by a member of the Improvements Committee, please try to help if you can!!

Arch Lease Update
The discussions have been finalised with the landlord with regards to the new lease. We have been very persuasive and have managed to secure a massive rent reduction for the next two years! The monthly rent for the Arch is now €425, meaning that we will be lowering the rent for all members, effective from February 2011, to €20 per month – this means that we all have 24:7 access to Dublin’s best bouldering facility for less than a fiver a week…that’s less than the cost of a pint!!
As discussed as the AGM there will also be some changes to the payment methods available – over the last couple of years Tony has done a fantastic job of keeping track of all of our payments. However, this task is very time consuming with the various ways in which we all pay our Arch dues. Therefore from February 2011 onwards there will be only two ways to pay your Arch dues:
- Monthly Direct Debit / Standing Order
- Yearly bank transfer
It is essential that you pick your preferred option and that you let us know which payment method you choose. You should also make any necessary changes to your direct debit / standing order to reflect €20 a month.
IMPORTANT
Your standing order / direct debit must make it easy for us to identify from whom the money is being received – be sure that you enter your name in the ‘message for receiver’s part of your payment!!!

Emergency General Meeting
We are proposing a number of changes to the terms contained in our Club Constitution (mainly corrections of typos!). In order to allow all members the chance to review and ratify these amendments, we will be holding an Emergency General Meeting in the Arch on Saturday 29th January from 14.00-15.00.
If you have any questions regarding the EGM, please contact us by email at the-arch-committee@googlegroups.com
Arch Youth Member Update
Following the AGM, Steve McGowan has been doing some investigation into the area of the potential of youth members in the Arch – see below for a brief update on his research:
- we have talked to the MI (Angela Carlin, Paul Swail)
- there is no requirement to get anyone vetted
MI have advised us the following with regards to any potential youth member policy:
- no need to parent/guardian to be present/be an Arch member
- if youth was to join it would be necessary to bring in their parent/guardian and show them the arch and what type of facility it is
- point out that there is nobody vetted, everyone is there at their own risk
- get parent to sign disclaimer acknowledging that they have been made aware of the risks and they are prepared to accept them
Please note:
The Committee is not not proposing to take any youth members on at the present time – we have investigated the possibility as it was agreed at the AGM that this is an area that is worthy of some thought / attention. Before any action is taken / policy is implemented there will be an online vote to allow all members to decide on this.

Arch Improvements
The Arch Improvements Committee, led by Ray Carter, met on Saturday 8th January to kick of their discussions regarding upcoming improvements to the Arch. The Improvements Committee is comprised of the following Arch members:
The suggestions put forward by all members on the forums formed the basis for discussions. The Improvements Committee have distilled these ideas from the forum into key areas and have assigned responsibility within the group for developing action plans for each area. The Improvements Committee will have a final action plan ready by the end of January for works to be carried out in February – further information will be distributed later in the month.
One thing that is sure, is that the guys cannot do all of the work on their own and will need support. Over the coming weeks you may be on the receiving end of a call from one of the Improvements Committee requesting your help to complete the works necessary to implement their plans – please do all that you can to help!!!
Grip Reset
Benky grip wash has been ordered to make the cleaning of the holds for the grip reset much easier!
The grip reset will take place immediately following the conclusion of the Improvements Works – more info to follow!

As part of the ongoing improvements to The Arch discussed at the Club AGM and via this website, The Arch will be closed for climbing on Saturday 08th January from 16.00 to 18.00 to allow the Arch Improvements Committee to meet to review the changes that will be made to improve our wall!
Your Arch Improvements Committee is comprised of the following members:
The guys will evaluate the ideas put forward on the forums and will create a plan for improvements.

Sorry for the delay but we’ve been busy recently. So adding onto our discussion on a previous post about re-setting we’ve taken the general opinions that are banging about and added them to a poll. We’ll be back to you with another poll about improvements as soon as we get a chance.
The poll is open until November 3rd @ 23:59….to allow people (like myself) who are going away for the week to have a chance to vote.If there’s any problems with this then we can extend it, so let me know in the comments.
The plan is to clean the holds when they are stripped, but as always there’s no problem if people want to clean individual holds while they’re in. This is the easiest way to handle the over trafficked holds, like the blue slopers. I usually mark the wall with some chalk so I know what way the hold was turned before and then just bring the hold over to the bathroom or the outside tap and give it a quick scrub with one of my own brushes or the nail brush in the toilet. Then just leave them out to dry for a while, put them up wet or use the fan heater (if it’s still around) to help them dry quicker.
It was brought to my attention that some people thought they weren’t allowed to take down holds to clean them, and I hope this clears this up. As always use your common sense, take down small batches of holds at a time (I usually clean 3-5 at a time), put the holds back where they were before you leave and respect others who might want to use the holds during their session.
How often do you think we should be re-setting the wall?
Total Voters: 22
